One of the first areas people can be confused about when it comes to voucher codes is what they’re actually called! Unfortunately there is little consistency amongst retailers and they are variously referred to as promotional codes, promotion codes, discount codes, discount vouchers and even online codes. The key point here is that they offer you the customer the potential to save money!

    Also, you are able to save money immediately. It is not in the form of a cheque through the post, or even a money off voucher for your next purchase: you get an amount knocked off the total price before it even hits your credit card!

    Some people question why the retailer offers such codes – if they can afford to sell a product for less shouldn’t they just keep it simple and do so in the first instance? Well, there are a number of reasons. It could be that a temporary code could help clear excess stock on a particular model. Quite often the codes are very time limited. They can appear without notice and unfortunately disappear just as quick!

    Using voucher codes is straight forward. Somewhere during the check out process you will see a box and some text. The following examples of how Dixons, Currys, Best Buy, Comet and Pixmania do it should be useful:

    Dixons discount code: This appears on the Order Summary page, before you enter your credit card details.

    Currys promotional code: This appears on the Payment Summary page, before you enter your credit card details.

    Comet promotion code: The box appears earlier in the process than it does for either Dixons or Currys: it is visible when you first go to the Basket page – look in the top left of the page for the following:

    Pixmania promotional code: This appears at the bottom of the Order Summary page, before any financial details are input:

    Best Buy promotional code: This appears middle left quite early on in the buying process, on the “Your Basket” page:

    Once you have entered the code and clicked on the recalculate/submit button you will see the total price reduced by [hopefully] the amount you were expecting. If it hasn’t then it is usually worth trying again to ensure the code was entered accurately (use of copy and paste can be handy here).
